China has become the world’s leading exporter of new energy storage products, driven by rapid technological advancements and strong global demand. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently released the Action Plan for the High-Quality Development of the New Energy Storage Manufacturing Industry, which calls for accelerating the iteration and upgrading of mature technologies such as lithium batteries, supporting breakthrough innovations, and expanding the supply of high-end products.
By the end of 2024, China’s total installed capacity for new energy storage surpassed 70 million kilowatts—roughly 20 times the scale recorded at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period and more than 130% higher than at the end of 2023.
Chinese energy storage companies are expanding into international markets at an unprecedented pace, from South Africa to Europe and Southeast Asia. With their strong performance in quality and cost-effectiveness, China’s new energy storage products now account for the highest global shipment volume. Industry analysts predict that total installed capacity could approach 100 million kilowatts by 2025.
